## What this data is

Vehicle *registrations*, not manufacturer sales or dispatches. A registration is
recorded when a vehicle is entered at a Regional Transport Office. Figures are
restated by the source as late registrations sync, typically within 90 days, so
a given month's number can rise for some weeks after that month ends.

## Coverage

- 1,490 RTOs across 36 states and union territories, grouped into 1,403 cities
- Segments: two-wheeler, three-wheeler, four-wheeler, car, tractor, commercial vehicle
- Dimensions: manufacturer, fuel type
- History from January 2020, refreshed daily at 05:00 IST

## Method notes for citation

- Segment definitions follow VAHAN's own vehicle-category and vehicle-class
  groupings, so totals reconcile with the source dashboard exactly.
- "4W" is VAHAN's four-wheeler category and includes tractors, trucks and buses.
  Use "car" for passenger cars alone.
- Month-to-date comparisons against last year are expressed as market share
  rather than volume, because the current month is partial and the comparison
  month is complete.
- Automated Testing Stations and private fitness centres appear in VAHAN's
  office list but register no vehicles; they are excluded.
